What is meditation?

Meditation is a practice that spans the millennia of human existence. There is no way of pinpointing when mediation became a practice as it is ingrained into many cultures and civilisations both present and long forgotten.

There are many forms of meditation from simple breathing exercises to religious practices. As there are many different forms of meditation, we recommend people start off with simple breathing exercises. This allows you to become familiar with the core techniques of meditation before branching out into different forms.

There are some forms that you may also be familiar with as they’re movement-based mediation. These are:

  • Yoga
  • Tai Chi
  • Qi Gong

There are other movement based meditations, such as Sufi walking meditations that are more religious/spiritual in nature. However, simply going for a walk can be a form of meditation.

There are also the traditional forms of seated meditation. These to come in many varieties and styles. For beginners we recommend a simple breathing exercise to aid in calming the mind. And no you don't need to sit in the form of a pretzel to meditate. The lotus position is traditionally practiced in some forms of eastern philosophy and isn't a requirement for all.

What are the benefits of meditation?

The health benefits of meditation can be numerous. From helping to reduce the symptoms of anxiety to creating a better quality of living for those with terminal illness. Mediation isn’t just for those who are unwell, it can also be used as an aid to increase concentration, develop good sleep hygiene, and even help improve your life goals.

The benefits of meditation are numerous but meditating once won’t help you in the long term. Developing a daily meditation practice is something we recommend to many people.

Are meditation and mindfulness the same?

In short, no they're not. Mindfulness is a form of meditation that is practiced by many people. It's history begins within the Buddhist way of life and has since been adapted by modern psychologists and mediation teachers as a none spiritual practice.

Can meditation help lower blood pressure?

There have been several studies that show meditation may be beneficial for those with high blood pressure. However, as with anything in life there are no guarantees that meditation alone will lower your blood pressure.

Can meditation help anxiety?

Meditation can be beneficial for many mental health conditions. There have been several studies and there is quite a bit of evidence that suggests it can help some people. If you do have a mental health condition joining a class may be helpful as it will allow you to practice in a safe environment with support on hand if needed.

Can meditation help me sleep?

Meditation is an amazing tool for improving sleep hygiene. It many be beneficial for those who are struggling to get to sleep or struggle to switch off and relax in the evenings.
