About Herbal Medicine
Herbal Medicine has been a part of human life for millennia and has evolved with humanity. As a herbalist I use many different forms of plant based medicines. Here are a few forms that I use on a regular basis.
Tinctures
Tinctures are the base for most internal western herbs. They consist of a concentrated alcohol extract of plants. They’re made by allowing plant material to steep for an extended period of time.
Many are concerned of the alcohol content, but the concentration means only 5-10ml is consumed in most doses.
Tisane
Tisane is the true word for any “Tea” that isn’t Camilla sinensis (regular Green/Black/White Tea). These are loose herbs that are premixed, and you will need to brew 3-4 times daily.
Granules
Granules are an integral part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and are much stronger than western forms of herbal medicine. Like instant coffee you just add a scoop to hot water and sip 2-4 times a day. The concentration of these is a 7:1 ratio meaning each 1 gram scoop is the equivalent of 7g of plant material.

Decoction
Decoctions are similar to tisanes only much stronger. Often a larger amount is brewed in boiling water for up to 30mins and allowed to cool. Once strained the decoction can be sipped throughout the day.
Capsules
Just like you would get from regular medicines or supplements capsules offer convenience for some who cannot take liquid forms. As a herbalist I don’t prescribe many of these or stock many due to the short shelf life and many herbs are needed to absorbed through the mucus membrane of the mouth for maximum therapeutic benefit.
Please note. Capsules are all made to order and take 10 days to dispense.
Creams, Ointments, Lotions, & Oils
External preparations can be used for many skin, lymphatic, and circulatory disorders. They have to be applied 2-3 times a day for maximum therapeutic benefit. As these are a bulky item they’re made or ordered in specifically for clients.
